I am Senior Lecturer in the School of Engineering at the University of Edinburgh, where my research focuses on flexible, low carbon electricity (and broader energy) systems.  Since mid-2018 she is also Degree Programme Manager for Mechanical Engineering degrees at the University of Edinburgh. 

As part of my PhD studies, I enjoyed the opportunity to spend relatively extended periods (around one month at a time) in North America collaborating with an electric power utility, EPRI (Electric Power Research Institute) and leading universities in my field including UT Austin.  I was also Network Director for the UK CCS Research Centre for several years.  Through these activities and others, I was able to build a strong national and international professional network. I have met many wonderful people and contributed to collaborative research and activities that are ‘more than the sum of its parts’.

I chose to join the VisNET team as the academic lead for the University of Edinburgh because I think it is important that we understand and explore how technology can help us to expand and look after our networks.  Although travel for work can be fun, it isn’t for everyone (for all sorts of reasons).  As the programme has developed, I have taken a particular interest in developing the training programme for VisNET participants.  I hope that I will be able to help VisNET participants discover effective ways to develop professional profiles – and then work with them to ensure that as many as people as possible are able to benefit from what we learn from their experience.
